Economic Sanction as a substitute for war in nuclear age
Daňhel, Ondřej ; Ludvík, Jan (advisor) ; Kofroň, Jan (referee)
The thesis deals with the issue of economic sanctions as one of the options to replace conventional war between states that threaten each other with assured destruction. The thesis examines this issue through the case of events on the island of Cuba during the Cold War and the rivalry between the United States, the Soviet Union and the regime in Cuba. For the purpose of the thesis, data relevant to this case are collected in the empirical part. The grounded theory method is then used to establish that in order to confirm the main research question, three events must be found in the data, which must be chronologically consecutive for the relationship to hold. The first of these events is the conventional war, between the United States and Cuba. This event must be followed by a second event, the cessation of these hostilities by the United States for no other reason than the threat of nuclear war, in order to be confirmed. Finally, this second event must be followed by a third event, the use of economic sanctions as a new instrument of war. The thesis concludes that these three conditions occur chronologically in the data, so it is shown in this thesis that in this selected case the United States resorted to economic sanctions as a substitute for a conventional war with a state with which, because of...

Sýkora, Marek ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
Bachelor thesis The Analysis of British Parliamentary Debate in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict between 2010 and 2015: The Comparison of Political Parties' Stances towards the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict deals with the stances of major British political parties, the Conservative Party, the Labour Party and to lesser extent also the Liberal Democrats, towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The thesis at first thoroughly examines through an analysis of parliamentary debates in 2010-2015 the stances of concerned political parties towards three important aspects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - the issue of recognition of Palestinian state on bilateral level, the issue of enhanced status of Palestine in the United Nations and the issue of some form of economic sanctions against the Israel or against the Jewish settlement in the West Bank. In subsequent comparison main dissimilarities and similarities are identified in stances of concerned political parties. In the end the thesis answers the question, whether the stances of political parties in question towards Israeli- Palestinian conflict falls within the confines of traditional bipartisan consensus in the foreign policy between the Labour Party and the Conservative party or not.
Economic sanctions as a tool of US foreign policy toward Cuba in the 1960s
Kleiberová, Kamila ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Pondělíček, Jiří (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on how economic sanctions work and also on their effectivness in a field of internation relations. The first part of the thesis shows an issue which makes the sanctions inefficient. The issue is a third party meaning that the third party can economically help to the sanctioned country. The theory is demonstrated on a case study of Cuban embargo imposed by the United States after 1959. The third party was the former USSR who helped Cuba from their economical problems so Cuba did not have to surrender to American conditions.
Assesment of the Effectiveness of Economic Sanctions: The Cases of Iran and North Korea
Hába, Tomáš ; Ditrych, Ondřej (advisor) ; Plášek, David (referee)
This thesis examines the apparent discrepancy in success between Iran and North Korea when it comes to developing nuclear weapons. Both states at one time sought to acquire nuclear weapons for internal political and external security reasons. But whereas North Korea successfully detonated its first atomic bomb in 2006, Iran was pressured into an agreement in 2015 which put significant restraints on its nuclear programme. This thesis finds that there were multiple contributory factors that lay behind these differing outcomes. Specifically, it finds that while both nations had similar motivations to acquire nuclear weapons, their economic/military capabilities and the external pressure against their ambition differed in one case from the other. The ability of North Korea to deter a potential military attack from the United States together with the regime's ability to rely on its Chinese and South Korean partners for diplomatic protection as well as its own brutality towards its own population played the key role.

Trpák, Martin ; Procházka, Pavel (advisor) ; Vebrová, Ludmila (referee)
This bachelor thesis analyses the impact of economic sanctions imposed on Iran on its trade bilance with selected OECD countries. By comparing trade data between Iran and such countries with trade data between Iran and its main trade partners, economic sanctions proved to be inefficient. In this thesis there is an detailed analysis of most important trade articles traded between Iran and four OECD countries. That could be used in future for more detailed analysis of how effective are economic sanctions.
